Liberty
Liberty Head Gold Piece $2.50 (1840-1907)
Liberty Head Gold coins are classic symbols of Americas golden past. The series includes the first-ever $1 and $20 gold coins, which were inspired in 1849 by the California “Gold Rush.” The Liberty Head gold coins feature elegant designs that were last struck nearly a century ago in 1908. Gold has always been treasured for its beauty and lasting value, and classic United States gold coins are the most respected and sought-after in the world. But the last circulating gold coins were minted more than 70 years ago, and over 90% of all US gold coins were melted by the US government in the 1930s. Millions more were melted for quick profits when the price of gold bullion shot up. As a result, only a tiny fraction of the original coins remain especially in extremely fine condition such as this example.
